Phase 4 - Creation

Here is where the majority of the work takes place as there is a lot of production and development which needs to go into it.

The target is to produce at a minimum 2 pages per week, taking into account external factors that might happen without forcing or pressuring a high turnout rate.

There are character designs, magic appearences, and the pages themselves which are being produced. As it progresses I will edit the pages accordingly (such as deciding in the end to colour it in a certain way, or tone it in a specific stye).

Magic

I wanted each character to have an identy that reached beyond the colour of their hair and magic, even though thats very important to them, I wanted to have a little more individuality to the magic but a connection between them and so the Colour Runners all have magic circles with some floral and astral connotations, such as flowers, stars, suns, all connected within circles. It also means that characters like Vanta Black, Jonquil and Tyrian have their own colours and patterns too which are different to the Colour Runners. There's also a hidden thematic pattern within the Colour Runners symbols that they are all circular and have flowers located within them, paticularly a lotus shape, which is a slight hint towards the chakras on my part. These will mostly be used whenever they summon or begin to use magic

Character Designs
Character Designs

The actual designs for the characters, I coloured becasuse i wanted to see what tones i'd have to use for when I was shading. I'm not going to colour every page, maybe just the cover but these bases work as designs for me work from and refrence for when I am drawing them out. They might not have all the patterning but the general design comes from these.

There are slight themes going on with the clothing styles and hair, such as Andromeda having galaxy patterned tights and Zaffera having a hidden wing pattern on her jacket.

Also as far as summoning goes, only Nalia cannot summon as she is too low leveled, but the rest can summon weapons or beings varying in complexity and strength.

Harley: a rudementary sheid and sword that glow green. The sheild is actually the same pattern as the magic circles they use.

Zaffera: The glaive/gun she carries throughout the first chapter is actually a summoned weapon that she keeps out and solid. Also an summon a pair of wings large enough to fly with and carry harley with.

Andromeda: Is shown to summon a gattling gun and fire off rounds of magic.

Alice: Can summon a giant bird called a Sarimanok (which Andromeda calls her Cock because it is a giant rooster) but because she's been using her magic at the rave needs a powerboost from everyone to get it up (yes there are many dick jokes around this).

These are mostly thought notes based on ideas I've had in the past as well as testing out things in smaller size

1 - Colour theory; magic spray sticks to walls and glows as mages pass it. Glows under black light.

2 - Colouring experiment. Magic circles and explosions. No colour blending just getting closer and closer to white. Linear Dodge when applying together. Also the Cerlews disolve when destroyed.

3 - Colouring thought; colouring the people in their signature colour. Don't think this will be done in practice. At most only when magic is being used and the little warpaint colour will be used rather than a solid block of colour. Aestheticaly it might work but not for the entire chapter with colouring and backgrounds and printing because some colours (like yellow) dont always show up well when printed out IRL.

4 - Fonts; Looking into how comics and graphic novels are made there seems to be a common theme with the type face being very similar to comic sans, (Anime Ace and Typo Comics are the most similar examples i could download). Its meant to be a readable type face which it is, but on the downside it's horrificaly ugly. I'm possibly going to go with Obelique as the reading font because it's still clear to read without it being fat and ugly. For the title font I'll either go with Early Bird Riser for the clear but also semi-painted look to it. I did consider the Neon one but I think EBR works better because the magic in the comic is fluid and smooth and the type face is also quite flowing.

5 -  A test of Obelisque as a reading font.
